چکیده

We describe local light-ray rotation in terms of complex refractive indices. We show that Fermat’s principle holds, and we derive an extended Snell’s law. The change in the angle of a light ray with respect to the normal to a refractive-index interface is described by the modulus of the refractive-index ratio, the rotation around the interface normal is described by the argument of the refractive-index ratio. c © 2009 Optical Society of America

Fermat's principle and the formal equivalence of local light-ray rotation and refraction at the interface between homogeneous media with a complex refractive index ratio.

We derive a formal description of local light-ray rotation in terms of complex refractive indices. We show that Fermat's principle holds, and we derive an extended Snell's law. The change in the angle of a light ray with respect to the normal of a refractive index interface is described by the modulus of the refractive index ratio; the rotation around the interface normal is described by the ar...

Effective refractive index for determining ray propagation in an absorbing dielectric particle

The ray-tracing technique can be employed to simulate the scattering of light by a dielectric particle whose characteristic dimension is much larger than the incident wavelength. When a scattering particle is absorptive, a localized electromagnetic wave refracted into the scatterer is inhomogeneous, which requires the use of an effective refractive index to determine the propagation direction o...

Huygens’ Principle and Computation of the Light Trajectory Responsible for the Gravitational Displacement of Star Images

A finite time-slice computational method has been developed to describe the effects of gravity on light rays passing close to the Sun by employing a theoretical approach introduced by L. Schiff in 1960. One of the key assumptions in the latter study is that each local observer finds a given light ray to travel along the same straight line with the same constant speed c. It is concluded that the...

Demonstration of a microfluidic polarimeter

Traditional methods of detecting chiral molecules, such as optical rotation are not suitable for miniaturization, since, the magnitude of the rotation of polarization scales down linearly with the optical path length of the device. Since the origin of optical activity is due to difference of refractive indices between the two circularly polarized states of light, it is possible to detect chiral...

Gravitational lensing by spinning and radially moving lenses

The effect of currents of mass on bending of light rays is considered in the weak field regime. Following Fermat’s principle and the standard theory of gravitational lensing, we derive the gravito-magnetic correction to time delay function and deflection angle caused by a geometrically-thin lens. The cases of both rotating and shifting deflectors are discussed.
